Travel Insurance. Know Before You Go

We are itching to travel again. But, before we go back it is necessary to take precautions. Travel Insurance is an important part of your next journey.

It may take a little research and a little extra time to make the calls. But, it will be well worth the effort should you have to file a claim.

  1. Determine what type of travel insurance you will need. There are different types for different reasons. Many airlines and hotels are offering free cancellations these days.  However, double check the policies and make sure you will not require Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption insurance.

  2. Trip Medical Coverage is now required by many countries. If you are traveling abroad make sure you have the correct coverage.

  3. Trip Medical Coverage is a supplement to your existing health care plan. Check with your provider to verify what will be covered when traveling outside the United States.

  4. KEEP ALL RECEIPTS. This is very important. Before you travel, put together a folder for the printed copy of your policy and any receipts you may incur.

  5. Add your policy number and the phone/email contact details to the folder. It’s always a good idea to also add this information to your cell phone.

  6. Make sure you know what number to use when calling from outside the country. Toll free numbers don’t usually work outside the United States.

  7. If available download the insurance company phone app. Set up your account prior to travelling.

  8. In regards to Covid-19. If you get sick while traveling outside the country the Trip Medical Coverage should cover these costs. However,  if for some reason you are required to be quarantined  this costs will be out of pocket. Double check your policy and call the company to verify this information.

Being prepared is peace of mind. It may cost a few extra dollars but having the insurance is worth the money.

I have over 8 years of travel industry experience and have had the unfortunate event of getting sick while travelling abroad. Having to worry about how you’re going to pay for medical costs is not fun when you’re ill and far from home.
