Hello Conscious Travelers!
A travel journal is a keepsake. It is an item you will treasure for years to come. I often look back on my journals and usually get a good chuckle from all the ridiculous things I did and said on some of my trips. I often find details that I completely forgot about. It might have been a meal I ate or a person I met, or a spectacular sunset I witnessed. Whatever the case, it was a memory that was neatly stored away in my own words and handwriting. They’re my memories and experiences. They are a personal recount of days past.
After college, I was fortunate to have backpacked across Europe with a close friend. We had the whole summer and were on a very tight budget. The journals I wrote recorded that summer in great detail. I have been talking about this trip with my children for years. A while back I gave my son the journals to read. Before I looked at them. Well, we had a good laugh. Some of the things I wrote down back then were priceless. What was I thinking! I remember the trip as all fun and games. But my journal told a different story. My friend and I didn’t always get along. There were two whole days in Venice where I didn't speak to a single person. I was homesick at some point and even lost my glasses. I wouldn’t have changed a single moment of that trip. Those journals remain a priceless family heirloom to this day.
Here are some tips for writing a memorable travel journal:
Pick a quiet spot, have a drink, take a deep breath and start writing.
You don’t need an hour, or to journal every day. All you need is as little as 10 minutes.
If you have a loss for words or don’t know how to begin. Go over the five senses. What did I see today? What did I taste? What did I hear? What did I smell? What did I feel? I promise once you start the words will come pouring out.
Write down details, like the names of people you met. Perhaps someone on staff treated you extra special at the resort or the tour you took that day.
Finally, of course, journaling is not only for travel. Journal every day. Set your intentions and write them down. Do this and the stresses of daily life will be minimized. It will keep you on task and you will become all the better for it. It only takes 23 days to adopt a new habit.
