As we continue our journey around the globe, exploring sustainable travel options and eco-friendly destinations, today we're setting our sights on the beautiful island of Bali. More specifically, we will delve into the inspiring partnership between Discova, a global destination management company, and the local villagers of Bali. This collaboration is not just about creating memorable travel experiences, but also about fostering sustainable tourism and community development.

Bali is one of thousands of islands that are part of Indonesia. It is known as the “Island of the Gods” The language is Balinese and the currency is the Rupiah (IDR) however, the US dollar is widely accepted.

There are two seasons in Indonesia the wet and the dry. The wet season is from November to April, and the dry season is from May to October. The high tourist season is from July to September. The weather is generally sunny and warm during this time of year.

FESTIVALS & NATIONAL HOLIDAYS

Before traveling to Indonesia it is essential to check for any holidays or festivals that may be celebrated during your visit. As a conscious traveler, it is important to respect the culture and the local traditions of the communities.

March or April - The Nyepi Balinese New Year usually falls in March or April. It is a Hindu celebration. The entire island shuts down for one day for silence, meditation, and fasting.

May 26-29 - Lebaran (or Idul Futri) This is a celebration of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. This two-day holiday is marked with special prayers, gifts, and feasting.

THE STANDARD GREETING IN INDONESIA

When I travel I like to know how to greet people in the country.  In Indonesia, the standard greeting is 'Selamat Pagi' for good morning, 'Selamat is slang for good day, “Selamat sore' for good afternoon, and 'Selamat Malam' for good evening.

The Balinese people also have their own local language, Balinese (or Bali), in addition to Indonesian. In Balinese, “Om Swasitastu'' is a common greeting, which roughly translates to 'peace and greetings from God”.

DISCOVA & KAURA BALI

Discova is the proud founder of Kaura Bali in 2019 they joined forces with the Bali Rare Paduraksa (BRP)* to address the pressing irrigation issue in the village of Manggis. With a revitalized water supply, the door was opened to innovative practices: enlightening workshops were launched to educate local farmers about organic and sustainable alternatives. Today, a harmonious partnership exists between Cross Hotels & Resorts, Discova, and the local community, all working in unison to nurture the ongoing growth of Manggis through Kaura Bali.

This initiative is designed to unlock the potential of underprivileged youth, offering them a six-month educational scholarship that paves the way for them to become the future leader in the tourism industry. The aim is to cultivate the next generation of extraordinary tour guides, who will not only share the beauty of their homeland with the world but also uplift their communities through their success.
