If you find yourself taking multiple short getaways throughout the year. It’s important to have a quality Weekender bag. Not only are these bags functional but they are a reflection of your personality and style.

The Weekender travel bag is a statement of who you are on the inside and what you want others to see on the outside. Personally, I always go for the more rugged and used look. You know those bags that tell a story. But, you may prefer a black sleek bag or one with an art print. Whatever it looks like, it suits you. It’s important you love it. After all, you'll be spending a lot of quality time together.

A Weekender bag is for those short getaways. Two nights or less. Three nights or more and you’re looking at luggage with wheels.

Your Weekender should be able to adequately hold your toiletries and enough clothing for the gym, the pool, pajamas, maybe a couple of pairs of shoes, jeans, and a nice outfit.

The Weekender could be for a girl’s getaway. A weekend retreat to a spa, the casino. visiting friends or even a trip to grandma’s house.

My Weekender is a Vera Bradley duffle bag. I’ve had it for years and still love it. It was a gift from my Aunt. She had it monogrammed with my initials and I take it everywhere, From overnights with mom to spa getaways. It’s stylish and timeless.

Whatever the reason, you need a Weekender that can deliver on its purpose. It’s a worthy investment for the occasional getaway. A good quality Weekender could last 10 years.

Here are 5 characteristics to consider before investing in your Weekender bag.

  1. Style: It has to be stylish. Either a visit to a friend or a spa getaway. You want to look good and feel good. Compare it to the tiny black dress. Always, looks good and always in style.

  2. Functionality: Look for multiple compartments.  Think about the space you’ll need to accommodate toiletries, shoes, workout clothes, laundry, your laptop.

  3. Size: It should be large enough to hold clothes for 3 days and 2 nights, but small enough to store in an overhead or the back seat of your car.

  4. Portability: Look for comfortable straps and easy-grip handles. You don’t want to be struggling to carry this thing to the front desk. Or up the driveway to your best friend's house.

  5. Durability: It has to be easy to clean and made from quality fabrics and materials. You want a strong zipper, sturdy buttons, buckles, and flaps.

You will probably be using your Weekender more than your larger pieces of luggage, it’s going to be thrown into trunks, back seats, and taxis. Dropped on the floor, slung over your shoulder. Passed to valets and bell staff, thrown on luggage carts, stuffed in overheads on trains, planes, and buses. It will be exposed to heat, rain, snow, and wind. Your weekender has to be able to handle the worst of any situation and come out looking unscathed.

Your Weekender does not have to cost a fortune, but don’t cut corners, spending a little more on a better quality bag will pay off in the end. It’s like buying a more expensive pair of jeans or cross-trainers. The better quality will last longer and the less money you’ll have to put out in the end and avoid repeatedly replacing a lesser quality bag. Don’t forget to get it monogrammed. Makes a great gift too!
